What Are Five-Year Inspections?

Five-year inspections are mandatory technical examinations of electrical installations conducted every 5 years. They are regulated by the PN-IEC 60364-6 standard and are a legal requirement in Poland for all buildings supplied with electricity.

Why Are They Important?

Electrical installations deteriorate and degrade over time. Five-year inspections ensure that your installation:

  • Is safe for users
  • Meets current safety standards
  • Properly protects against electric shock
  • Does not pose a fire hazard
  • Is fit for use

Who Is Required?

Every building or property owner in Poland must conduct five-year inspections. This applies to:

  • Single-family homes
  • Apartments in blocks
  • Garages
  • Utility rooms
  • Companies and businesses
  • Public buildings

Frequency - Inspection Schedule

Residential Apartments and Private Homes:

  • New installation: Before commissioning (technical acceptance)
  • Then: Every 5 years (five-year inspections)

After Renovation or Extension:

  • Before using the modified installation
  • Then again - every 5 years

Public and Commercial Buildings:

  • May require inspections every 3-5 years (depends on building use)

What Do the Inspections Cover?

1. Visual Inspection

  • Checking all wires (no cracks, damage)
  • Condition of switches, outlets, equipment
  • Distribution panel - wires, circuit breakers, protections
  • Grounding and protection

2. Technical Measurements

  • Insulation resistance measurement: Checks if wire insulation is good (should have minimum 1 MΩ)
  • Loop impedance measurement: Measures phase-neutral circuit resistance (important for protection operation)
  • Grounding measurement: Checks if grounding works properly
  • RCD circuit breaker test: Checks if residual current devices will operate in case of shock

3. Functional Tests

  • Testing circuit breaker and protection operation
  • Network voltage control
  • Harmonics and power tests

Step by Step: How Does the Inspection Proceed?

Step 1: Call an Electrician

Contact a licensed electrician who can conduct five-year inspections. Schedule a visit at a convenient time for you.

Step 2: Prepare Documents

Prepare installation documents (diagram, previous inspection reports). If you don't have them, the electrician can conduct examinations without them.

Step 3: Measurements and Inspection

The electrician will spend 2-4 hours on inspection and measurements (depending on installation size).

Step 4: Inspection Report

You'll receive a detailed report with measurement results, photographs, and recommendations regarding any repairs.

Step 5: Certificate of Compliance

If everything is in order, you'll receive a certificate of installation compliance with safety standards.

What to Do If There Are Problems?

If the electrician finds problems, don't panic. Most of them can be repaired:

  • Poor insulation: Replacement of damaged wires
  • Lack of RCD protection: Installation of residual current device
  • Poor grounding: Repair or replacement of grounding
  • Old circuit breakers: Replacement with modern protections

Costs - How Much Do Inspections Cost?

Example Costs (Bydgoszcz market 2025):

  • Small home/apartment: €105-170
  • Medium home: €170-320
  • Large home/office: €320+

Note: Price depends on installation size, number of rooms, and installation condition. Always ask for a free quote!

Can I Ignore the Inspections?

Legally:

Technically it's a legal obligation. If you don't conduct inspections, you may be fined (up to €1,050). However, the main reason to do them is your safety and your family's.

Insurance-wise:

Some home insurance policies require current five-year inspections. If you don't have them, they may refuse payment in case of fire or electric shock.

How to Prepare for Inspections?

  • Make sure all electrical devices are working
  • Schedule a time when you'll be available throughout the inspection
  • Prepare installation documents (if you have them)
  • Ensure access to the distribution panel and meter
  • Have a ready list of any changes you've made (new outlets, devices, etc.)

Summary

Five-year inspections are not just a legal obligation, but above all an investment in the safety of your home and family. If you haven't had inspections done in a long time, don't wait - contact us to schedule a free consultation and quote for five-year inspections.
