Introduction

Electrical safety is one of the most important issues in every home. Every year, thousands of people sustain injuries due to electric shock. Most of these accidents could have been avoided by knowing and following basic safety principles.

1. Protection Against Electric Shock

Electric shock can be fatal. That's why residual current devices (RCD - Residual Current Device) are mandatory in modern homes.

What is a Residual Current Device?

A residual current device is a unit that immediately detects unintended current loss and switches off the circuit in less than 0.3 seconds. This can save your life.

  • Should be installed in every home
  • Requires regular testing (monthly)
  • Test using the "Test" button on the device

2. Electrical Installation Inspection and Mandatory Five-Year Inspections

Five-year electrical inspections are mandatory in Poland for all buildings - residential, public utility, and industrial. This is not an option but a legal requirement resulting from safety standards.

Old electrical installations pose serious hazards. If your home is over 30 years old, the installation should be inspected every 10 years. However, regardless of building age, if your last inspection was conducted more than 5 years ago, you are in violation of the law.

Warning signs of problems:

  • Frequent circuit breaker trips
  • Smell of burning plastic or insulation
  • Hot switches or outlets
  • Discoloration or black residue around outlets
  • Crackling or buzzing sounds from walls

3. Safe Device Usage

Not all electrical devices are safe to use in every situation. Here are some basic rules:

In the bathroom:

  • Never use hair dryers or electric razors near water
  • Outlets should be connected to RCD protection
  • Don't keep electrical devices on shelves above the bathtub or shower

In the kitchen:

  • Keep devices away from sinks and countertops with water
  • Never touch devices with wet hands
  • Regularly clean device ventilation openings

4. Take Care of Cords and Plugs

Damaged cords are a common cause of fires and electric shocks.

What to check:

  • Cracks or kinks in cord insulation
  • Loose or tangled cords (can cause overheating)
  • Plugs with visible burn marks
  • Equipment that crackles, rattles, or sparks

5. Power Strips and Extension Cords

Power strips are a source of convenience, but also danger if used improperly.

  • Don't daisy chain power strips
  • Don't overload power strips - check maximum wattage
  • Don't leave extension cords in wet areas
  • Unplug devices that are not in use daily

6. Emergency Lighting

Emergency lighting and uninterruptible power supplies (UPS) can save your life during a power outage.

  • Install emergency lights on staircases
  • Keep flashlights and batteries in accessible places
  • Get a power bank for phones

7. Insurance and Professional Help

Always leave complicated electrical problems to professionals. Attempting to repair on your own can be dangerous.

Serious Consequences of Missing Five-Year Inspections:

If you fail to conduct mandatory five-year inspections, you face serious consequences:

  • Home insurance problems: Most insurance companies require current five-year inspections. If they discover you don't have them, they may refuse to pay compensation in case of fire, electric shock, or other damage resulting from installation defects.
  • Risk of property loss: Faulty electrical installations are a leading cause of house fires. Without insurance, you lose your home, furniture, documents, and all savings.
  • Legal liability: In case of an accident caused by faulty electrical installation, you may face criminal and civil liability.
  • Fines: Missing five-year inspections is an offense punishable by fines up to €1,050 (approximately 5,000 PLN).

When to call an electrician:

  • When you notice the problems mentioned above
  • Before moving into a new home
  • After renovation that changed the installation
  • Immediately to conduct mandatory five-year inspections - don't wait for an accident!
