Introduction

The electric and hybrid vehicle market is growing explosively. If you're considering purchasing an EV or PHEV vehicle, one of the most important decisions will be installing a home charger. In this article, we'll tell you everything you need to know about choosing and installing a charger.

Why Install a Charger at Home?

Installing a car charger at your home is not a luxury, but a practical solution that changes how you use an electric vehicle.

Main Benefits:

  • Convenience: Charge your car while sleeping - wake up with a full battery
  • Savings: Home charging is cheaper than public stations (on average 50-70% cheaper)
  • Availability: Always access to charging, regardless of time
  • Independence: No dependence on public charging infrastructure
  • Speed: 11 kW wallbox charges the car in 3-4 hours
  • Property Value: A home with an EV charger has higher market value

Types of Chargers - Comparison

1. Standard Charging (Home Outlet)

The simplest but slowest solution. You use a regular 220V outlet at home.

  • Power: ~2-3 kW
  • Charging time: 24-48 hours (full battery)
  • Cost: Almost free (you already have the outlet)
  • Disadvantage: Very slow, not recommended for daily use

2. Wallbox 7 kW

Popular choice for single-family homeowners. Ideal for daily overnight charging.

  • Power: 7 kW (single-phase model)
  • Charging time: 6-8 hours (full 60 kWh battery)
  • Installation cost: ~€750-950
  • Advantage: Safe, affordable price, ideal for home

3. Wallbox 11 kW

Faster charging. Requires three-phase power (available in most homes).

  • Power: 11 kW (three-phase)
  • Charging time: 3-4 hours (full battery)
  • Installation cost: ~€950-1,150
  • Advantage: Fast charging, still affordable price

4. Fast Charging Station (22 kW and higher)

Professional solution for businesses or ambitious individuals.

  • Power: 22+ kW
  • Charging time: 1-2 hours
  • Installation cost: ~€1,700-3,200
  • Disadvantage: Expensive, requires powerful supply

Step by Step: How to Choose a Charger

Step 1: Check Your Car's Battery Capacity

Larger batteries require more power for fast charging. A BMW i3 (42 kWh) will charge faster than a Tesla Model S (100 kWh) at the same power.

Step 2: Assess Daily Needs

How far do you drive daily? If less than 50 km, a 7 kW wallbox is sufficient. If 100+ km, consider 11 kW.

Step 3: Check Power Supply at Home

Check whether you have three-phase power (needed for 11 kW+) or single-phase (max 7 kW).

Step 4: Consult with an Electrician

Always consult with a licensed electrician. They will check if the home installation can handle the load and if upgrades are needed.

Costs - What You Need to Know

Installation Cost (example for 11 kW wallbox):

  • Wallbox: ~€425-750 (without installation)
  • Electrical installation: ~€320-425
  • Notifications/permits: ~€105
  • Total: ~€950-1,280

Funding

Check government programs! In Poland there are subsidies for charger installation (e.g., "Mój prąd", provincial programs).

Safety and Standards

Chargers must be installed in accordance with standards:

  • PN-IEC 61851-1 (standard for chargers)
  • PN-IEC 60364-1 (general electrical standards)
  • Requirement to include RCD protection

Operation and Maintenance

Modern chargers are very reliable, but require basic maintenance:

  • Clean plugs from dirt and moisture traces
  • Don't drag cables over sharp edges
  • Check that the connector is clean before use
  • Regularly test the safety function

The Future - Vehicle to Home (V2H)

V2H technology allows drawing energy from the car battery to the home. This is the future! The car not only charges, but can power the home during a power outage. The revolution is just beginning!
